Description
MG-Bac® is an inactivated (killed) injectable vaccine produced by Zoetis and used to protect chickens and turkeys against Mycoplasma gallisepticum infection, the bacterial disease responsible for chronic respiratory disease (CRD)in poultry.
In Uganda’s growing poultry sector—particularly among layer and breeder farms—Mycoplasma infections can significantly reduce productivity by causing respiratory illness, poor weight gain, reduced egg production, and increased susceptibility to other infections. Vaccination with MG-Bac® helps farmers reduce these losses and maintain healthier flocks.
Purpose
MG-Bac® is used to help prevent the clinical signs associated with infection by Mycoplasma gallisepticum. The vaccine supports flock health by reducing the severity of disease, which may include:
-
Persistent coughing and sneezing
-
Nasal discharge
-
Swollen sinuses and breathing difficulties
-
Reduced feed efficiency and slower growth
-
Drops in egg production in layers
Because Mycoplasma gallisepticum spreads easily through direct contact, contaminated equipment, and infected breeding stock, vaccination is an important preventive measure for poultry farms in Uganda.
Target Birds
MG-Bac® is recommended for:
-
Chickens (layers, breeders, and sometimes broilers)
-
Turkeys
Birds should be healthy and free from stress at the time of vaccination.
Dosage and Administration
The vaccine is administered by subcutaneous injection.
-
Dose: 0.5 mL per bird
-
Injection Site: Under the skin in the lower neck region
This method ensures the vaccine is delivered directly into the tissue where it can stimulate a protective immune response.
Vaccination Schedule
For optimal protection:
-
Administer two doses of the vaccine.
-
The doses should be at least 4 weeks apart.
-
The full vaccination program should be completed before the birds begin laying eggs.
In Uganda’s commercial layer systems, this usually means vaccinating birds during the rearing stage before point-of-lay, ensuring immunity is established before production begins.
Storage Requirements
To maintain vaccine effectiveness:
-
Store in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C.
-
Protect from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
-
Maintain the cold chain during transport from veterinary suppliers to the farm.
Although some documentation may reference room temperature in specific contexts, standard veterinary practice is to keep bacterin vaccines refrigerated.
Slaughter Withdrawal Period
Birds vaccinated with MG-Bac® should not be slaughtered for human consumption within 42 days after vaccination. This withdrawal period ensures food safety.
Use in Integrated Disease Control
In areas where Mycoplasma infections are common, MG-Bac® may be used alongside live MG vaccines to strengthen flock protection programs. This integrated vaccination approach is sometimes used in high-risk poultry production areas.
Important Precautions
Farmers and poultry managers should follow these guidelines:
-
Vaccinate only healthy birds.
-
Use sterile syringes and needles to prevent infections.
-
Do not freeze the vaccine.
-
Shake the vaccine gently before use to ensure uniform mixing.
-
Follow manufacturer instructions and consult a qualified veterinarian or poultry extension officer for the appropriate vaccination program.
Importance for Ugandan Poultry Farmers
Respiratory diseases are a major challenge in poultry production in Uganda. Vaccination with MG-Bac® helps farmers:
-
Reduce respiratory disease outbreaks
-
Maintain consistent egg production in layers
-
Improve flock health and growth performance
-
Protect investments in feed, housing, and management
When combined with good biosecurity practices, proper ventilation, and sound farm management, MG-Bac® contributes to more reliable and profitable poultry farming in Uganda. 🐔
