Description

Poulvac® E. coli is a modified-live bacterial vaccine produced by Zoetis that protects poultry against diseases caused by Escherichia coli, commonly responsible for Colibacillosis.

Colibacillosis is a major health challenge in poultry production worldwide and is increasingly recognized in Uganda’s commercial poultry farms. The disease can cause respiratory infections, organ damage, reduced growth, and high mortality, particularly when birds are stressed or exposed to other infections. Vaccination with Poulvac® E. coli helps strengthen flock health and reduce productivity losses associated with this bacterial disease.

Purpose

Poulvac® E. coli is used for active immunization of poultry to help prevent disease caused by pathogenic Escherichia coli bacteria. Vaccination helps reduce:

  • Mortality in poultry flocks

  • Respiratory infections such as airsacculitis

  • Internal infections such as pericarditis and perihepatitis

  • Production losses associated with bacterial outbreaks

The vaccine specifically targets pathogenic E. coli serotypes, including the commonly problematic O78 strain, which is associated with colibacillosis in poultry.

Target Birds

The vaccine is suitable for:

  • Chickens (broilers, layers, and breeders)

  • Turkeys

Recommended vaccination ages include:

  • Chickens: From 1 day of age or older

  • Turkeys: From 3 days of age or older

Birds must be healthy at the time of vaccination for best results.

Administration Methods

Poulvac® E. coli is designed for mass vaccination, which minimizes handling stress and allows large flocks to be vaccinated efficiently.

1. Coarse Spray

  • Most common method, especially in hatcheries.

  • Administered to chicks at day-old using a spray system.

2. Drinking Water

  • Used primarily for chickens as a booster or for older birds.

  • Can be administered from 5 days of age or older.

These methods allow the vaccine to spread naturally among birds and stimulate immunity.

Vaccination Schedule

Typical vaccination programs include:

  • First dose: At day-old via spray in the hatchery

  • Second dose (for long-lived birds): At 12–14 weeks of age

The booster is particularly important for future layers and breeder flocks that remain in production for longer periods.

Benefits for Poultry Production

Studies have shown several benefits associated with Poulvac® E. coli vaccination:

  • Reduced antibiotic use: Vaccination can reduce antibiotic treatment requirements by approximately 16%.

  • Improved flock survival (livability).

  • Better feed conversion efficiency in broilers.

  • Reduced processing condemnations due to bacterial infections.

  • Lower veterinary treatment costs.

For poultry farmers in Uganda, these benefits translate into higher productivity and lower disease management costs.

Risk Factors for E. coli Infection

E. coli infections in poultry often occur when birds are weakened by other stressors, such as:

  • Viral infections like Infectious Bronchitis

  • Poor ventilation or overcrowding

  • Poor chick quality

  • Mycotoxins in feed

  • Gut health problems

  • Sudden weather changes

  • Reduced or eliminated antibiotic use

Vaccination helps protect birds from secondary bacterial infections that often follow respiratory disease outbreaks.

Storage Requirements

To maintain vaccine potency:

  • Store at 2°C – 8°C in a refrigerator

  • Protect from direct light

  • Use the vaccine within 2 hours after reconstitution

Maintaining the cold chain is essential in warm climates like Uganda.

Antibiotic Interaction

Because the vaccine contains live bacteria, antibiotics can interfere with its effectiveness.

  • Do not administer antibiotics within one week before or after vaccination.

Antibiotics may kill the vaccine strain and prevent immunity from developing.

Precautions

Farmers and poultry managers should follow these guidelines:

  • Vaccinate only healthy birds.

  • Avoid vaccinating during periods of severe stress.

  • Do not expose the vaccine to sunlight or disinfectants.

  • Follow proper biosecurity and hygiene practices during vaccination.

For turkeys, the vaccine should not be administered within six weeks before the start of laying or during the laying period.

Packaging

Poulvac® E. coli is typically supplied in freeze-dried vials with common pack sizes such as:

  • 10 × 5,000-dose vials

  • 10 × 20,000-dose vials

These pack sizes make the vaccine suitable for both medium and large poultry operations.

Importance for Ugandan Poultry Farmers

Bacterial infections caused by E. coli are common in poultry farms where birds face environmental stress or respiratory diseases. Vaccination with Poulvac® E. coli helps farmers:

  • Reduce bacterial disease outbreaks

  • Lower reliance on antibiotics

  • Improve flock survival and productivity

  • Maintain healthy birds in broiler, layer, and breeder systems

When combined with good ventilation, quality feed, proper hygiene, and strong biosecurity, this vaccine supports more sustainable and profitable poultry production in Uganda. 🐔
