Description
Poulvac® IB Primer is a live attenuated viral vaccine produced by Zoetis for the protection of chickens against Infectious Bronchitis (IB). The vaccine combines two different strains of the Infectious Bronchitis virus to provide broader protection against respiratory disease in poultry.
In Uganda’s poultry industry, Infectious Bronchitis is a common viral disease that spreads rapidly in flocks, particularly in areas with high poultry density or poor ventilation. The disease can cause respiratory illness, poor growth in broilers, and reduced egg production in layers, making vaccination an essential preventive measure for poultry farmers.
Purpose
Poulvac® IB Primer is used for active immunization of chickens to help reduce the impact of Infectious Bronchitis infections. Vaccination helps to:
-
Reduce respiratory signs such as coughing, sneezing, and nasal discharge
-
Protect birds from performance losses caused by IB infections
-
Improve flock health and productivity
-
Prepare birds’ immune systems for later vaccinations in longer production cycles
The vaccine is particularly useful as a primary (“primer”) vaccination in layer and breeder flocks before additional vaccines are administered later in life.
Vaccine Composition
Each dose contains live attenuated strains of Infectious Bronchitis virus, including:
-
H120 strain – Massachusetts type
-
D274 strain
The combination of these two strains provides broader protection against multiple IB virus variants.
Target Birds
Poulvac® IB Primer is intended for:
-
Chickens
-
Broilers
-
Future layers
-
Breeder flocks
Birds should be healthy at the time of vaccination for best results.
Administration Methods
The vaccine is supplied as a freeze-dried (lyophilized) pellet that must be reconstituted with clean water before use.
Common methods of administration include:
1. Spray or Nebulization
-
Often used in hatcheries for day-old chicks.
-
Fine droplets allow birds to inhale the vaccine and develop respiratory immunity.
2. Drinking Water
-
Used for older birds on farms.
-
The vaccine is mixed in clean, chlorine-free drinking water for mass administration.
3. Eye Drop (Intraocular)
-
A drop is placed in the bird’s eye.
-
Ensures accurate dosing for individual birds, often used in smaller flocks or breeder stock.
Vaccination Schedule
Typical vaccination programs include:
-
Broilers:
-
Can be vaccinated from the first day of life.
-
-
Future layers and breeders:
-
Used as a primary vaccination from day-old chicks, or
-
Administered during the 3rd or 4th week of age to prepare birds for later inactivated vaccines.
-
Vaccination schedules may vary depending on local disease risk and farm management practices in Uganda.
Storage Requirements
To maintain vaccine potency:
-
Store in a refrigerator at 2°C – 8°C
-
Do not freeze the vaccine
-
Protect from direct light and heat
Maintaining the cold chain during transport and storage is important, especially in warm climates.
Handling and Usage
-
Once the vaccine is reconstituted, it should be used immediately, usually within 2 hours.
-
Use clean, chlorine-free water for preparation when administering via drinking water.
-
Avoid exposing the vaccine to sunlight or disinfectants, which may inactivate the live virus.
Withdrawal Period
Poulvac® IB Primer has a zero-day withdrawal period for both meat and eggs, meaning vaccinated birds can safely enter the food chain without delay.
Packaging
The vaccine is typically supplied as:
-
1 pack containing 2,500 doses
This pack size is suitable for small to medium poultry farms, hatcheries, and breeder operations.
Importance for Ugandan Poultry Farmers
Infectious Bronchitis remains a major cause of respiratory disease and production losses in poultry farms. Vaccination with Poulvac® IB Primer helps farmers:
-
Protect flocks from respiratory disease outbreaks
-
Improve broiler growth and feed efficiency
-
Maintain egg production in layer flocks
-
Build stronger immunity before additional vaccinations
When combined with proper farm hygiene, ventilation, good nutrition, and strong biosecurity, vaccination programs help ensure healthy and productive poultry farming in Uganda. 🐔
