Description
Poulvac® IB QX is a live attenuated vaccine produced by Zoetis for the protection of chickens against Infectious Bronchitis caused by QX-like variants of the Infectious Bronchitis virus (IBV). The vaccine uses the L1148 strain of the virus and is designed to reduce respiratory disease, kidney damage, and mortality associated with these variants.
In Uganda’s expanding poultry industry, Infectious Bronchitis remains a significant challenge for both broiler and layer farmers. New viral variants, such as QX-like strains, can spread rapidly and cause severe production losses. Poulvac® IB QX helps provide targeted protection against these strains as part of a comprehensive vaccination program.
Purpose
The vaccine is used for active immunization of chickens to reduce the effects of Infectious Bronchitis caused by QX-like variants. Vaccination helps to:
-
Reduce respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, and breathing difficulties
-
Prevent kidney lesions associated with severe infections
-
Lower mortality rates in affected flocks
-
Protect productivity in broiler and layer operations
When used correctly, the vaccine helps strengthen flock resistance to variant strains of Infectious Bronchitis that may not be fully controlled by traditional IB vaccines alone.
Target Birds
Poulvac® IB QX is intended for:
-
Chickens
-
Broilers
-
Future layers
-
Breeder flocks
Vaccination can begin from day-old chicks depending on the vaccination program.
Age of Vaccination
Recommended vaccination ages include:
-
Broilers: One dose from 1 day of age
-
Future layers or breeders: One dose from 7 days of age
In some programs, future layers or breeders may also receive the vaccine as early as one day old, especially when maternal antibodies against Infectious Bronchitis are present.
Method of Administration
The vaccine is typically administered through:
1. Spray Vaccination
This is the most common method for hatcheries and large poultry farms. Fine droplets containing the vaccine are sprayed over the chicks.
2. Oculonasal Method
The vaccine is administered as a drop in the eye or nostril, ensuring each bird receives the correct dose.
These methods allow the vaccine to stimulate immunity in the respiratory tract, which is the primary entry point for Infectious Bronchitis virus.
Onset and Duration of Immunity
-
Onset of immunity: Approximately 3 weeks after vaccination
-
Duration of immunity: Approximately 63 days
Because protection is time-limited, additional vaccinations may be required in longer production cycles, particularly in layer and breeder flocks.
Vaccine Composition
Each dose contains:
-
Live Infectious Bronchitis virus (L1148 strain)
-
Viral concentration approximately 10³ – 10⁵ EID₅₀ per dose
-
Gentamicin included as a preservative
The vaccine is supplied as a freeze-dried powder that must be reconstituted before use.
Storage Requirements
To maintain effectiveness:
-
Store in a refrigerator at 2°C – 8°C
-
Protect the vaccine from light and heat
-
Maintain the cold chain during transport and storage
Proper storage is particularly important in Uganda’s warm climate.
Packaging
The vaccine is typically supplied as:
-
Freeze-dried powder
-
Vials containing approximately 2,000 doses
Precautions
Farmers and poultry managers should observe the following guidelines:
-
Vaccinate only healthy birds.
-
Avoid exposing the vaccine to sunlight or disinfectants.
-
Do not mix with other vaccines unless specifically recommended by the manufacturer.
-
Use protective measures when handling the vaccine since it contains gentamicin, which may cause irritation.
Role in a Broader Vaccination Program
For effective control of Infectious Bronchitis, Poulvac® IB QX is often used alongside other IB vaccines, such as those targeting the Massachusetts strain. This combined approach helps protect flocks against multiple circulating IB virus variants.
Importance for Ugandan Poultry Farmers
Respiratory diseases are among the leading causes of productivity losses in Uganda’s poultry sector. Vaccination with Poulvac® IB QX helps farmers:
-
Reduce respiratory disease outbreaks
-
Protect broiler growth rates
-
Maintain egg production in layer flocks
-
Strengthen flock health against emerging virus variants
When combined with good farm management, ventilation, and biosecurity practices, this vaccine supports more reliable and profitable poultry production in Uganda. 🐔
