Description

Poulvac® SE is an inactivated, multivalent vaccine produced by Zoetis that protects healthy chickens against Salmonella Enteritidis (SE). SE is a significant pathogen in poultry, capable of colonizing the intestines and reproductive tract, leading to reduced flock performance and food safety concerns. Vaccination with Poulvac® SE helps reduce internal organ colonization and the risk of SE contamination in eggs and meat.

In Uganda, where poultry products are an important source of nutrition and income, controlling Salmonella is crucial for both flock health and food safety.

Purpose

The vaccine is used for active immunization to:

• Reduce colonization of SE in the intestines and reproductive organs

• Minimize the risk of foodborne Salmonella contamination

Target Birds

Poulvac® SE is intended for:

• Healthy chickens

• Suitable for layers and breeders, particularly those approaching the laying period

Birds must be healthy at the time of vaccination for effective immunity.

Dosage and Administration

The vaccine is administered via subcutaneous injection (under the skin), typically at the base of the neck.

• Recommended age: 12 weeks or older

• Dosage per bird: 0.3 mL

• Vaccination schedule: Two separate doses, given 3–4 weeks apart

This schedule ensures adequate protection before the birds begin laying eggs.

Storage Requirements

To maintain vaccine efficacy:

• Store in a refrigerator at 2°C – 8°C

• Keep in the dark; do not freeze

• Maintain the cold chain during transport and storage

Proper storage is essential in Uganda’s warm climate to preserve vaccine potency.

Safety and Handling

• The vaccine is designed for use only in healthy birds.

• Use clean and sterile injection equipment.

• Follow good biosecurity and hygiene practices during vaccination.
